Affirming Practices in Aging and Mental Health Part 1: Agents of Change: Addressing Ageism in the Work

When: Wednesday, October 14 - 10:00 AM

Duration: 2 hours

Location: Zoom

Event Details:

Ageism affects the physical health, mental well-being, and daily lives of older adults. In this session, we defined ageism and its forms, and unpacked the myths that fuel it. We examined how age bias shapes social determinants of health, including in mental health settings. We reflected on our own biases and preconceptions, and explored practical, age-affirming approaches to working with older adults.

Participants learned how to:

  • Describe how ageism correlates with adverse outcomes on social determinants of health

  • Recognize the influence of social/cultural myths on our own relationships with aging

  • Identify person-centered approaches to foster deeper empathy and connections with older adults
