Screening for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders: Identification, Assessment, and Early Intervention

When: Friday, September 25 - 12:30 PM

Duration: 1 hours 30 minutes

Location: Zoom

Event Details:

Every year, one in five birthing people suffer from a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). PMADs include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and psychosis. PMADs are the number one complication associated with childbirth and the leading cause of maternal mortality in the U.S.; with a notably higher incidence among black and brown birthing people. Despite these alarming statistics, 75% of perinatal people experiencing mental illness remain undiagnosed and untreated, potentially resulting in lasting physical and mental health challenges for both the birthing parent and child. Screening for PMADs is a critical first step in ensuring the new and expecting birthing people don’t fall through the cracks. Using evidence-based assessments can lead to early identification of these conditions and connection to appropriate care. The good news is that all PMADs are totally treatable with the right support.

This training will provide an overview of PMADs including how to identify risk factors, recognize signs and symptoms, and appropriately screen pregnant and postpartum individuals with an array of validated screening tools including:

  • Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)

  • Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7)

  • Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS)

  • Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ)

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Inventory (OCI-4)

  • Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSR)

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5)
