Pregnancy and the Psychological and Developmental Transition to Parenthood
When: Monday, September 14 - 10:00 AM
Duration: 1 hours 30 minutes
Location: Zoom
Event Details:
This session offers participants the opportunity to examine pregnancy and the transition to parenthood as a process of human development. Participants will explore the multidimensional domains of maternal adaptation, or the physiological changes in the birthing person that occur during pregnancy and learn to frame perinatal distress and well-being through a developmental, biopsychosocial lens.
Learning Objectives:
As an outcome of participating in this learning module, you will be able to:
-
Describe the multidimensional domains of maternal adaptation, including the biological, psychological, social, occupational, and existential processes that characterize the developmental transition to parenthood.
-
Identify risk and protective factors that increase vulnerability and promote resilience across each domain of maternal adaptation.
-
Explain the concept of matrescence, which is the physical, emotional, and psychological process of becoming a mother, as a normative developmental process and distinguish it from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).
-
Apply a developmental, biopsychosocial, and strengths-based framework to assess and support birthing persons during the transition from pregnancy to parenthood.
